On March 1, 2023, our Building 21 Philadelphia school leadership team was informed by the School District of Philadelphia that a routine Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) inspection identified damaged asbestos in need of immediate remediation. As more inspections were done, more issues were uncovered. Most students are currently learning virtually while we work with the School District to finalize a space plan for the remainder of the school year.

The School District of Philadelphia, like school districts across the country, is faced with a tremendous challenge when it comes to the condition of facilities.  This challenge will only be overcome through intentional planning, sustained and increased financial investment, public/private partnerships and a long-term strategic facilities plan to ensure that all of our young people can be educated in a healthy and safe environment.

We are working with the District, students, staff and families to determine the best option for the remainder of the year. The District is working to remediate the environmental issues within the building so that we can return safely. Thank you to everyone who has supported the school during this challenging time.
