Our Pathways program increases access to career-connected learning opportunities for students. All students at Building 21 Philadelphia participate in Pathways.

    Pathways opportunities include dual enrollment, internships with community partners, electives taught by industry professionals, and career immersion experiences.

    We were excited to have the program back and in person in Fall 2021. Students took advantage of Pathways to gain insight into college and careers. Students take a college course while enrolled in high school and an Institution of Higher Education. Dual enrollment offers rigorous courses and provides an introduction to and preparation for college life and expectations. In addition, these programs offer an accelerated pathway through college that saves students time and money. Current dual enrollment partners include:

    • Harrisburg University
    • LaSalle University
    • The Community College of Philadelphia
    • and Arizona State University.

    We were proud to have 18 students receive dual enrollment credit in the 2021-2022 school year. 

    After two years of virtual experiences, Building 21 Philadelphia launched in-person internships for 11th-grade students in the Spring.  We had 66 students complete the internships with companies, including:

    • Fleishman School of Art
    • Camden Aquarium
    • Princeton University Computer Architecture
    • and Broad St Animal Hospital.

Our electives are taught by Guest Teachers who are industry professionals. In the fall, our robotics cohort entered their first competition and went head to head with several seasoned teams as they advanced to the semi-finals in the RoboJawn competition in May. In addition, they have participated in a Design It! Workshop, a Build It! Workshop and Program It! Nine students completed their junior internships through this initiative. The teachers and students were thrilled with the support received from Building 21 students.

    Also, Senator Art Haywood invited 20 tenth graders to participate in a weekly academic summit with professors from LaSalle University. Students visited classes and toured the campus at the end of the program. It was the first time most of these young scholars had visited the campus, which is less than 2 miles from Building 21 Philadelphia. Many topics catered to student career interests, including cancer research and marine biology. The activities included a trip to Fox Chase Cancer Center to explore cutting-edge ideas in cancer prevention and treatment and practice laboratory techniques used to discover the development of cancer This fall, we have 39 students earning college credits through dual enrollment. Our 11th-grade students have begun the preparation process for internships, and small groups have met virtually with experts in their fields of interest. Seniors working on their capstone projects participated in a service launch, with students leading the way in a neighborhood clean-up and others assisting in nearby elementary and middle schools.

    It came to be because students at Building 21 High School in Allentown are shown that their learning is not complete until they can take it out into the community to make an impact.

        • Lehigh University: Whose professors and grad students spent years partnering with our teachers and students to design these learning experiences.
        • PPL: Whose arborists generously spent their time with our students, when they weren’t busy traveling to help other communities recover from hurricanes.
        • The Lehigh County Conservation District: Who not only joined classes during instruction but also provided a grant which paid for all the trees that would be planted through this project.
        • The City of Allentown’s Shade Tree Commission and Department of Public Works: Without whose help and heavy equipment students might still be out there digging the holes to plant those trees!
        • And ASD’s facilities staff: who helped see these trees through their early years when both summer break and then a global pandemic meant that no one was on campus to see to their watering.

column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]While new tree plantings had to be paused due to the disruptions of the past few years, students have spent time each year caring for the trees and helping them continue to grow.  Just last month saw students taking shelter in their shade during a particularly hot and sunny day.  It is that work that recently led to Building 21 Allentown being recognized for this work by the Arbor Day Foundation as a National Tree Campus.

    Our public education system is facing a crisis that is decades in the making. This historic neglect of investing in the critical social, digital and physical school infrastructure that supports student learning is exacerbating the negative effects of the Covid pandemic in our most high-need schools. Or, as the Siegel Family Endowment laid it out in a recent white paper: “Infrastructure, or lack of it, is partitioning society into haves and have-nots…”

    Disproportionate Impact of Our Lack of School Infrastructure Investment

    Physical Infrastructure:  “American Society of Civil Engineers gives the condition of America’s 100,000 public school buildings an overall grade of D+…And no wonder – half our school buildings are half a century old.”1 These challenges are particularly acute in financially-strained urban districts serving many of our highest-need students.

    Digital Infrastructure:  “According to BCG research in 2020…roughly 30% of children in grades K-12 (15 million to 16 million students) did not have adequate internet service or e-learning devices to effectively continue their schooling from home…the digital divide disproportionately affects Black, Latinx, and Native American students and those from lower-income households.”2

    Social Infrastructure:   “Across all student race groups, students in high-poverty schools have the least access to positive school climate”3  “Effective, experienced teachers can transform a student’s educational experience, and have been shown to improve student attendance, achievement, and long-term outcomes… Black and Hispanic students had the least access to quality educators.”4

Engaging with Siegel’s ideas concerning the inherent multidimensionality of infrastructure (physical, social and digital), pushed us to understand the intersectionality of some of our critical design principles, specifically the three design principles that have guided our work since we launched our first school in 2014:

The key design elements of our schools (schedules, hiring practices, IT systems, learning models, curriculum, etc) are all oriented to support the development of these positive relationships.

Since inception, we have intentionally broadened the definition of our available physical infrastructure in our schools by adopting a “permeable” school model in which students are pushed out into the surrounding community and in which the community is brought into our school environment on a regular basis. Our young people engage with the broader world through job shadowing, worksite visits, internships and apprenticeships. In turn, we bring the community into our schools by bringing in visitors and regular co-teachers for our classes. All of our curriculum, tasks and student information is online, and our students use their laptops as their primary textbook, learning tracker and digital creation tool. In addition, we work with our students and families to ensure that they have access to internet connectivity. Through our learning management system, our data dashboards and our data analytics engine, these investments in our school community’s digital infrastructure allow us to harness the power of providing real-time student progress and growth information that is tied directly to evidence of mastery of our competencies.  All relevant data is available and organized in transparent, user-friendly ways for all of our constituents (students, parents, teachers, admins, and partners).     Erick worked with Nate Bronstein, Founder & CEO of SmartTrack, to learn more about a career in game design and create a game of his own.     Throughout the experience, the students overcame the challenges of connecting virtually. Ms. Parker witnessed her students’ resilience. Students and mentors will meet once a week, either virtually or in person. Besides career exposure, students will develop their professional skills and grow their networks.

    To get younger students thinking about different careers and their junior year LTI opportunity, the school will hold career exposure activities throughout the year for all grades.     This spring, Building 21 Allentown and Olympus Corporation of the Americas (Center Valley) partnered to launch a new engineering and design studio centered on sustainable design, STEM career exposure, and 1:1 mentorship.

    Members of Olympus’ Emerging Professionals CAN (Colleague Affinity Network) were searching for an alternative, Covid-safe way to volunteer and mentor young people interested in STEM. Communities in Schools, a partner to both Building 21 and Olympus, connected Olympus to Kristyn Senneca (B21 Partnership Coordinator) and Melissa Routson (B21 teacher and studio designer).     Miss Routson then challenged her students to design and manufacture something to make the world a better place. They focused on the engineering design process while designing their product and based their product on one of the 17 SDGs of their choice. Additionally, the studio is designed for the students to work on their Building 21 NextGen Essentials. Students will collaborate in teams and present their work twice.

    Olympus mentors and partners support these studio outcomes through both 1:1 mentorship and timely engineering and business development presentations led by Olympus experts.

    Initially, the mentors reviewed the SDGs with their students and helped brainstorm product or service designs to advance their chosen SDG. Mentors also provided feedback at each milestone.     Their first course milestone was a “My Big Why” presentation.

    [/split_line_heading][vc_column_text]This presentation summarized their research and plan for a final product. In this “My Big Why” presentation, students presented the goal they researched and explained the significance to them personally and the significance to the SDGs.

    Student ideas included developing a portable fire extinguisher that could prevent forest fires and promoted through social media (SDG #15). Another team of students focused on Quality Education (SDG #4) and designed a building plan for an ideal school. Other ideas focused on Life Below Water (SDG #14) to develop a website and pamphlet of endangered species of fish and sea life for fishers.

    Students were tasked with researching a set of diverse political positions and creating a blog and podcast to share their reactions and views. Students examined at least three political parties to understand the party’s stance on economic, social, and political issues. Students then chose the party that best matched their personal beliefs and ideas and supported their choice in their writing and media production. Their podcasts allowed the students to tackle tough issues and voice their opinions on the issues. Mr. Hamilton reflects: “In doing just this, they were then able to really understand what it means to sign on to a political party.”

    Following the elections, students once again engaged as active citizens in a Presidential letter writing challenge.

    They submitted a letter to President Biden expressing their support or criticism for one of his cabinet nominees based on their research. They also identified a single issue and advocated for the department to prioritize this issue during the administration’s first 100 days.

    Many chose to write letters in support of President Biden’s nominees in Homeland Security, Education, and HUD. They identified and prioritized issues important to them and their community, such as reopening schools, managing Covid-19 vaccinations, creating jobs, and supporting black-owned business.     Mr. Hamilton reflected that this process not only improved the quality of the students’ final letters, but also helped the students develop a deeper understanding of the competencies: “You’ve got to own the competencies.     Most importantly, this approach to ELA and Social Studies led to students engaging in their learning in a meaningful way. Inspired by their teachers’ call to action, they produced a series of real-world, student-driven products that impacted their world. Mr. Hamilton told his students: “This is your opportunity to decide what speaks to you and then roll with it. You know everything you need to do. Find out what you’re passionate about and investigate it.” And they did.     Cici reflected on her Building 21 experiences that inspired her pathway.

    [/split_line_heading][vc_column_text]It is at Building 21 that Cici realized the impact of her voice. In school, people listen and take interest in what she has to say. She reflected on approaching Principal Jose Rosado, Jr. with challenges and his willingness to listen and take action. Cici served on the Building 21 Allentown Student Council, where time and again, she felt the value of her voice. Knowing that she is heard in school gives Cici hope that she will impact the real world. Cici’s Civics teacher, Shannon Salter, reflects on this experience as a moment when she witnessed Cici’s growth and readiness to be a voice of advocacy for herself and others in her community.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]“The way Cici presented herself in that room full of over a hundred students, superintendents, and the Attorney General of PA was really a sight to see. I observed her building coalitions with students she had just met that day in order to reach consensus on ideas they wanted to share with the Attorney General.     The plan for the session was to discuss bullying in schools. However, Cici and her peers raised their voices to challenge the plan.

    [/split_line_heading][vc_column_text]The group of students told Attorney General Shaprio that if he wanted to talk about bullying but not the broader issues of teen mental health, then he would not learn what he needed to learn. In response to their advocacy, he listened to the group’s ideas and concerns and changed his agenda on the spot. The remaining listening tour stops broadened the agendas to include discussions on mental health supports for students. For Cici, that moment is one she will never forget.

    Cici shared: ​”I really love [the iCivics] program. I always used to think about problems – things I wanted the government to do – but I never thought I’d be heard! I had no idea how people got their voices heard. I wondered if I was going to have to shout from a rooftop, or stand on a corner handing out papers. Now, I know how people are heard. Each year, she focuses her fall senior Civics studios on voter participation and the history of voters’ rights. This timely studio energizes seniors to educate and mobilize their community, earning them recognition from the Governor’s Office and When We All Vote.

    Here’s a closer look at Shannon’s studio design and impact.

    The first civics studio of the year is all about civic participation through the right to vote. Students investigate who has the right to vote and who does not, how inclusion in the idea of “We the People” has changed over time, what strategies have been used to expand the right to vote, and what obstacles still exist as barriers to voter participation. At the conclusion of this studio, students will advocate for new strategies or changes in policy to address low voter turnout, through the writing of an argument essay and through the creation of a social media campaign designed to get out the vote in their own community. Students also tackle the individual decision of whether they will become voters, and are supported in completing their voter registrations.     What is the most important thing you want your students to learn/understand?

    The goal of all four years of social studies education at Building 21 is to prepare students for engagement in civic life. I design instruction that gives students authentic experiences in taking their learning – whether it is learning about history, or science, or literature – and translate it into empowered action in their communities. Their capstone civics experience is about ensuring that students leave school with a toolbox full of the tools they will need to be successful citizens – what are the many ways they can raise their voice and have an impact on the neighborhood, city, state, nation, and world that they live in?     What impact do you see?

    There is a great sense of confidence that comes from being able to be part of events, rather than having events happen to you. Even when students are too young to begin participating in adult citizenship through voting, I see a calm that comes when students have the tools to observe events in the world with understanding and knowledge of their ability to act or to provoke others to act on their behalf. The 2016 Presidential Election was a good example of this. Students in our largely immigrant community were right to be full of questions about what that election meant for them and their families. But rather than despair and rage, students came back to school the day after the election ready to start conversations and get to work, because they’d been taught that they are equal partners in the social contract between themselves and the government, and that there are tools that can be used to get their ideas, their concerns, and their needs elevated to those who govern.

    This type of confidence is infectious. Every year we see students not only registering themselves to vote, but asking for additional voter registration forms because they have given their family members and friends the motivation to become voters by sharing their learning. Some students take it even further. Last year, I had the privilege of escorting one motivated student to a city council campaign event, where she – at the age of 16 – stood up and demanded that the panel of candidates commit to policies to further protect the immigrant students of Allentown and their families. Her voice moved those candidates to address her issue, on the record, and this cemented her needs and those of her classmates as a municipal election issue. I escorted another student to a protest demonstration pushing for schools to be made safer from gun violence.     Shannon (BA in Political Science; M.Ed. in Secondary Education) is certified in Secondary Social Studies, ELA, and Communications. Having taught for nine years, this is her sixth year at Building 21 Allentown. She is a founding humanities teacher and is a studio designer with the Building 21 Network. Shannon currently teaches Civics, Yearbook, a Criminal Justice elective, and AP US Government.

    Shannon is a member of the iCivics EdNet, the ESRI T3G (Teachers Teaching Teachers GIS) Network, the Pennsylvania Council for Social Studies, and the National Council for Social Studies.
